Damaged database with a message "Fatal disk error: Bad file number"

If linux server gets message "Fatal disk error: Bad file number", it means the database is damaged. What could be the reason for such an error? Is it something we can prevent?

When the issue occurs, should see if restarting presence or lookup helps. If so - that is the issue and should be sorted. First need to ensure that that is the issue...
